HAVANA, Cuba -- Neither an untimely sending off nor horrendous pitch
conditions could derail Canada in its latest chase of an elusive World
Cup berth. Justin Tucker Pink Jersey
.
Olivier Occean scored in the second half and 10-man Canada held on for a
1-0 win over Cuba to kick off the third stage of CONCACAF World Cup
qualifying Friday.
Occean scored the games only goal in the 54th minute. David Edgars
well-placed cross from the right side was neatly headed by Occean past
Cuban goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper.
The goal was timely, as Canada went down to 10 men shortly after when
goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld was given a straight red card for handling
the ball outside the Canadian box.
It was fitting that Canadas winning goal came in the air, as the
condition of the pitch at Estadio Pedro Marrero in Havana made it tough
for the teams to get any sort of flow going.
"I would not know how to describe the field. Its not even playable,"
Occean said. "We came out with a big win and thats important for us."
Canadian head coach Stephen Hart said the field could play havoc for
Cubas other opponents in qualification.
"It was difficult for the players today--very, very difficult," Hart
said.
"I think Cuba are going to take points from anybody that they play here.
A lot of teams that have a passing game and passing patterns are going
to struggle."
After training Thursday captain Kevin McKenna had called it the worst
pitch he had ever played on. Those conditions combined with the hot and
humid weather could have tripped up the Canadians --many of which play
professionally in Europe on perfectly manicured fields.
But as the game kicked off at the stadium built in 1929, and the teams
emerged from the ramshackle, sheet-metal roofed tunnel, the skies were
overcast and there was a solid wind that made things tolerable.
"It was definitely hot but we did a good training camp in Florida and
there wasnt much difference there," Edgar said. "The little breeze
helped but it was just brilliant. Those are the things we have to
overcome in CONCACAF."
Anything short of three points would have been a disappointment to a
Canadian side looking to make the World Cup for the first time since
1986. Canada now has four wins and a draw in its last five matches
against Cuba.
Canada is ranked 77th in the world and Cuba is 145th.
Both teams came up with a couple of chances in the first half, though
Canadas were more dangerous as the visitors started to take control as
the half wore on.
Cuba had the first chance to score in the games opening five minutes,
but a free kick went just wide of the post.
Canada had a great chance to open the scoring in the 20th minute. Will
Johnson set up Dwayne De Rosario at the left side in front of the Cuban
goal, but his shot was parried by the goalkeeper and no Canadian player
could get to the generous rebound.
Cuba came close again 10 minutes later when Marcel Hernandezs drive was
tipped over the bar by Hirschfeld.
Tosaint Ricketts fired the ball just over the Cuban goal in the 39th
minute.
De Rosario had the best chance of the first half in stoppage time as his
shot from right in front of the goal hit the underside of the crossbar
and did not cross the goal-line.
Cuba gave Canada a scare early in the second half but Alberto Gomezs
shot from a tight angle went off the far post of the Canadian goal.
The Cubans were the better team to start the second half, but Occeans
goal took a lot of the fight out of them.
Hirschfeld was shown a red card after he handled the ball outside the
box in the 63rd minute. A dangerous free kick was poorly taken by Cuba.
"I came out pretty aggressively and basically looking to play it out to
the left back with my head and when it bounced it popped up really high
over me," Hirschfeld said.
"It was a desperation thing -- either let it get up over me and into the
box and let them have a go at it. I havent seen it but I think I was
about a foot or two out (of the 18-yard box)."
Goalkeeper Milan Borjan came on in place of Ricketts.
Cuba failed to take advantage of its numerical superiority, and Canada
ended up having the better late chances. Substitute Simeon Jackson had a
chance in the 85th minute but his shot was just off target. Cooper
parried De Rosarios shot in the 87th minute.
Despite three great chances to score De Rosario remained stuck at 19
international goals -- tied for the Canadian lead with Dale Mitchell.
Canada brought on Atiba Hutchinson in the 69th minute in place of Julian
de Guzman. Hutchinsion had missed Canadas friendly against the United
States last week with a knee injury.
Cuba had just its second corner kick of the match in the 90th minute but
it was easily cleared by Canada, and the visitors dominated possession
in injury time.
Hirschfeld wasnt the only Canadian to get booked in the game. Defender
Ante Jazic was booked in the 61st minute for a poorly timed tackle on
Hernandez, and Johnson was booked in the 76th minute for a tackle on
Aliannis Urgelles.
After the game, Serbian-born Borjan went to the corner of the pitch to
join the hundred or so Canadian fans who had made the trip to Havana.
The fans threw him a hat, a flag, and a scarf and Borjan put them on and
celebrated with the fans before heading to the locker-room.
"Thats the best thing that can happen to a player when their home fans
come to a visitors field," Borjan said. "I dont know how to explain it.
Its just awesome. Thanks to them for coming."
Canadas next game is Tuesday against Honduras at Torontos BMO Field.

Atalanta midfielder Luca Cigarini scored with a long shot from the top
of the area in the 64th minute after teammate German Denis hit the post
midway through the first half.

Logan McVeigh, Carson Perreaux, Mark McNeill and Josh Morrisey had the goals as Prince Albert (4-0-1) won its fourth in a row.
Travis Ewanyk replied for Edmonton (3-2-0), which lost to Prince Albert at home in regulation for the first time in five years. Jacoby Jones Elite Jersey

"I wasnt planning on this," Frost said. "Only when I hit it close on 13

chance to win).NEW YORK -- The highest-paid player in baseball could
only sit and watch when Raul Ibanez pinch hit for him and tied the game
with a bottom-of-the-ninth home run.
Alex Rodriguez had another good view from the dugout three innings later
when Ibanez homered to win it.
Saved by manager Joe Girardis gutsy move -- and Ibanezs big swings --
the New York Yankees rallied for a stunning 3-2 win in the 12th over the
Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night for a 2-1 lead in their
best-of-five AL division series.
"Youre going to be asked a lot of questions if it doesnt work," Girardi
said.
The slumping Rodriguez, among the greatest power hitters in history,
offered no complaint, telling Girardi: "Joe, you gotta do exactly what
you gotta do."
"Maybe 10 years ago I would have reacted in a much different way," A-Rod
said.
Ibanez then stepped up and hit a tying, solo shot to right-centre with
one out in the ninth off major league saves leader Jim Johnson to make
it 2-all.
Yankees fans had been howling this week for Girardi to drop Rodriguez
out of the No. 3 spot in the batting order. But Girardi was reluctant to
move his fading slugger down in the lineup.
Until he took him all the way out.
"You have to make some decisions sometimes that are tough decisions. I
just had a gut feeling," Girardi said.
Rodriguez has 647 career home runs -- hes chasing the all-time record of
762 by Barry Bonds -- and is making $29 million this year. But was just
1 for 12 with no RBIs and seven strikeouts in this series when Girardi
pulled him.
"It kind of caught me off-guard, hitting for a guy whos
half-a-billionaire," Orioles centre fielder Adam Jones said.
It was the first time Rodriguez had ever been pinch-hit for in a
post-season game, according to STATS LLC.
And it worked.
Rodriguez immediately turned to injured Yankees closer Mariano Rivera,
raised one arm, then both arms and traded high-fives with his star
teammate. When Ibanez returned to the bench, Rodriguez was the first
player to greet him.
"He said great job. A-Rod is a great teammate and great team player,"
Ibanez said. "Hes the first one on the top step congratulating you. Its
aboout winning. Haloti Ngata Pink Jersey.
Its about the Yankees and continuing."
Ibanez remained in the game and connected on the first pitch from
Brian Matusz in the 12th.
Ibanez became the first player to homer twice in a post-season game in
which he didnt start, STATS said.
Phil Hughes will try to clinch it for the Yankees on Thursday night in
Game 4. Joe Saunders will start for Baltimore.
Baltimore had won 16 straight extra-inning games, and had been 76-0 when
leading after seven, before the Yankees stung them.
"It was a great experience. We do it as a team. We stay after it,"
Ibanez said. "Im blessed to come up and have the opportunity like that.
We do it together. its about a team and about winning."
The brash, young Orioles appeared poised to move within a win of their
first trip to the AL championship series since 1997 before the Yankees
comeback.
Ibanez hit a 1-0 pitch into the seats in the ninth, setting off a
raucous celebration in what had been a demoralized Yankee Stadium crowd.
After their 10-game July lead was cut to zero in early September, the
Yankees repelled every Orioles charge. The teams were tied 10 times in
the final month but New York ended up atop the division.
New York won the opener in Baltimore scoring five runs in the ninth off
Johnson. The Orioles won Game 2 and rode Miguel Gonzalezs pretty
performance to a 2-1 lead in the ninth.
But the Yankees limited Baltimore to one hit after 20-year-old
Manny Machado homered in the fifth. Ryan Flaherty homered earlier for
the Orioles.
Robert Andino was doubled off second after leading off the Baltimore
ninth with a single and advancing on a sacrifice.
Boone Logan got one out in relief of Hiroki Kuroda, who gave up two solo
homers in 8 1-3 innings. Closer Rafael Soriano pitched 1 1-3 innings
and David Robertson went two, finishing off his outing by bumping into
and tagging Andino to end the top of the 12th.
Derek Jeter tied the score with an RBI triple in the third for the
Yankees. Jeter, limping after fouling a ball off his foot, came out
after eight innings. He says we will be able to play Thursday.
NOTES: Rivera threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
