The team rallied up around me. This is my release xiaoweiwei 发表于 2013/1/27 19:45:00 |
Canadas veteran womens basketball coach would love nothing more than to
lead a team out onto the court on sports greatest stage. Colin Kaepernick Elite Jersey
.But when Allison McNeill was asked recently what an appearance in the
London Olympics would mean to her, she was quick to say that the Games
are virtually nothing about her and everything about her players.
"The longer you coach and the more youre around and you see how hard
they work, its not as important to me as it is for them to go," McNeill
said. "I want them to go so badly."
The Canadian women open the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament Monday in
Ankara, Turkey, in their quest for their first Olympic berth since the
2000 Sydney Games.Teresa Gabriele of Mission, B.C., is the only holdover
from Canadas Sydney squad that finished 10th.
Kim Smith of Mission and Chelsea Aubry of Kitchener, Ont., both made
their national team debuts a year later. All three endured the
heartbreak of failing to qualify for the 2004 and 2008 Olympic
Games."For someone like Teresa and Chelsea and Kim, theyve been to two
world championships, they stuck through some games where we were just
getting hammered, and theyve trained so hard and they sort of set the
tone of how we would be professional," McNeill said.No. 11 Canada is the
fourth-ranked team in this tournament, and must finish top-five to earn
an Olympic berth.
The Canadians face 19th-ranked Mali on Monday, then No. 8 France on
Tuesday, and needs only to finish top-two to make the quarter-finals.
The quarter-final winners earn an Olympic berth, and the quarter-final
losers play off for a fifth spot. Thus, two victories would secure Canada
a ticket to London.
The squads theme for its Olympic mission is "Win the day," which they
came up with the help of sports psychologist Roger Friesen and is
written across the back of their practice shirts."We have to focus on
that day, that game, that execution," McNeill said.
"It takes a lot of practice to stay in the moment."When we got the
draw, we saw we have to win two days, so our thing was to win the day.
If we win every day in practice, we bring our best every day, and we
play our best, we can do it. I think its given them a focus.
"McNeill has seen her players grow up over the last decade, and believes
the team finally has the experience it needs for that Olympic
appearance thats been a long time coming."You cant go somewhere with
girls and beat women," McNeill said. "You have to have some experience
and finally were right there. Its so exciting."
Smith, a first-round WNBA draft pick and all-American at the University
of Utah, called this Canadian squad the best shes ever played for."We
finally have a group of older players as well as the really good
up-and-comers," said the six-foot-two forward.
"Im excited. These are going to be the biggest games of my career, so
theres definitely nerves. But its really excited nerves, its not
anxious."Gabriele, whos 32, and the 28-year-old Smith are taking what
might be their last shot at the Games.
McNeill estimates anywhere from two to six players could retire after
this summer."I think its really exciting," said Gabriele, who starred at
Simon Fraser University before playing pro in Spain and Austria.
"I think this is the best chance weve had to qualify and with a few of
us kind of towards the end of our careers, if not at the end of our
career, its a huge opportunity."The Canadians failed to earn a London
berth at the FIBA Americas qualifying tournament last fall, but their
third-place finish guaranteed them a spot in the last-chance qualifier
in Turkey.
Canadas mens team, which also hasnt made an Olympic appearance since
2000, didnt qualify for the last-chance event.Canadas only team to
qualify for London is womens soccer.

.S. Open on the line, Tiger Woods tested his game at The Olympic Club
on Tuesday.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- C.J. Spiller gladly accepted Fred Jacksons
challenge.
And this time, the rest of the Bills -- on offence, defence and
special teams -- showed up to support Spiller who scored twice and
finished with 123 yards rushing to spark a 35-17 win over the Kansas
City Chiefs in Buffalos home opener. It was a much better effort than
how Buffalo opened the season with a bumbling 48-28 loss to the New York
Jets last week.
The same cant be said for the Chiefs, who followed up one dud with
another a week after opening the season with a 40-24 loss to Atlanta.
Spiller picked up where he left off a week earlier, after he had
career-best 169 yards rushing in taking over after Jackson sprained his
right knee against the Jets.
"Its always better to answer the questions when you win," said
Spiller, who giggled several times at the podium. "Fred Jackson
challenged me today, when he told me to put the team on my back. So when
that comes down from the leader in our room, you have to step your game
up. I was ready to go today."
With Jackson expected to miss another three weeks, Spiller scored on
17- and 5-yard runs to put the Bills ahead 14-0 early in the second
quarter, a lead that would balloon to 35-3 late in the third.
"C.J.s a stud. That kid can run," centre Eric Wood said. "Weve got
plenty of weapons, and the good thing is were going to get Fred back."
With 292 yards on 29 carries, Spiller is off to such a hot start that
hes averaging 10.1 yards per rush. Thats the highest average by an NFL
player with a minimum of 25 carries through the first two games of a
season since 1963, when Jim Brown averaged 11.3 yards (34 carries for
394 yards).
The Bills defence finally showed signs of its high-priced potential
after failing to make a dent last week.
Kyle Williams had two of Buffalos five sacks. Mario Williams -- the
teams high-prized off-season free agent -- recovered quarterback
Matt Cassels fumble, which set up Scott Chandlers 10-yard touchdown
catch.
And linebacker Nick Barnett had a momentum-turning play late in the
first half. Thats when he forced Kansas City running back Peyton Hillis
to fumble at the goal line to preserve Buffalos 21-0 lead.
"We had a sense of urgency. It was just different from the very
beginning," Mario Williams said. "We went out there and put it all on
the line. Unfortunately, that didnt happen last week, but we have to
build on this and continue."
Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick shrugged off last weeks
three-interception outing by going 10 of 19 for 178 yards and two
touchdowns, including a 49-yarder to Stevie Johnson. And Buffalos
special teams contributed: Leodis McKelvin returned a punt 88 yards. Justin Smith Pink Jersey.
It was a complete reversal for the Bills who turned the ball over
four times against the Jets, failed to get any pressure on Mark Sanchez
and allowed Jeremy Kerley to return a punt 68 yards for a score.
For the Chiefs, it was the same-old sloppiness, for a team thats been
outscored 75-41 and is opening a season 0-2 for the sixth time in seven
years.
"I thought that we would be better, and were not," coach Romeo
Crennel said. "So we have to try and figure out what that is. From what
Ive seen, if we do what were supposed to do, then we would be better."
KCs offence managed just 71 yards on its first five possessions and
then coughed up the ball on its sixth, when Hillis fumbled at the goal
line.
"I messed up and let the team down," Hillis said. "I put the blame on
myself."
Cassel finished 23 of 42 for 301 yards with two touchdowns and an
interception, with much of that production coming in the fourth quarter.
Dwayne Bowe scored both touchdowns on 33- and 2-yard catches.
The Chiefs defence wasnt much better, even while welcoming back two
regulars, linebacker Tamba Hali (NFL suspension) and cornerback
Brandon Flowers (foot injury).
The Chiefs were so thoroughly outplayed on both sides of the ball in
the first half that Spillers 139 yards from scrimmage nearly matched
Kansas Citys 148 yards net offence.
The Bills had additional incentive to win the game in paying tribute
to Marcell Dareus. The second-year defensive tackle played after
travelling to his native Alabama to mourn the shooting death of his
younger brother.
"Hes going through a rough time, but he felt responsibilities here,"
Kyle Williams said. "He always picks our team up and were glad that hes
back."
Despite being bothered by a shoulder injury, Dareus had a sack, two
tackles, including one for a loss.
"The team rallied up around me. This is my release from whatever is
going on in the outside world," Dareus said. "I focused in on the
football field and took everything else out of my head."
Notes: Spiller became the fourth Bills player to reach 100 yards in
the first two games of a season, joining Jackson, Thurman Thomas and
O.J. Simpson, who did that twice. ... Chiefs TE Kevin Boss will be
re-evaluated after leaving the game with a head injury in the second
quarter. CB Javier Arenas hurt his neck and did not return. ...
McKelvins TD return was the second of his career, and the second-longest
in team history, 3 yards short of the record set by Keith Moody in
1977.
