She lapped the field to end the xiaoweiwei 发表于 2013/1/17 19:26:00 |
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yu Darvish is feeling right at home in Texas, where
hes already done something only one other major league pitcher has
accomplished in the past half-century. Isaac Sopoaga Jersey
.
The Japanese standout has won his first seven career home starts after
the Rangers 7-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
Overall, he matched the American League lead with his 10th victory less
than halfway through his first season in the majors.
Darvish (10-4) struck out 10 in seven innings for his fourth
double-digit strikeout game. After giving up two runs the first four
batters, he settled down and got into a nice groove -- something he has
already done a few times with the Rangers after sluggish starts.
"It seemed like the longer the game went, the better he got," manager
Ron Washington said. "He was trying to get rhythm again those first few
innings. They put some runs on the board, but we came back and answered,
and he continued to pound the strike zone. All of a sudden his fastball
was crisper, his breaking ball was crisper."
The Rangers said, according to Elias, the only other pitcher in the past
50 years to win his first seven career home starts was Carlos Perez for
the Montreal Expos -- eight in 1995. Kenny Rogers is the only other
pitcher to win seven consecutive starts at Rangers Ballpark at any
point.
The only walk Darvish allowed was Austin Jacksons to start the game,
though the big right-hander hit Miguel Cabrera in the left earflap of
his helmet with a 92-mph fastball before Prince Fielders double quickly
put the Tigers up 2-0.
Darvish threw 113 pitches on a night when the game-time temperature was
103 degrees, and finished strong. He retired the last seven batters he
faced, striking out the last two.
"Thats one of the top high-level lineups in the league and I was looking
forward to facing these hitters," said Darvish, who didnt feel
overwhelmed by the heat either. "My teammates still tell me its not as
hot as its going to get. ... Even though it was hot, I didnt feel too
uncomfortable."
The AL West-leading Rangers went ahead to stay with a four-run fourth.
They were up 5-3 after consecutive RBI singles by Yorvit Torrealba and
Brandon Snyder -- the Nos. 8 and 9 batters in the lineup.
Josh Hamilton later homered for the second night in a row, his leadoff
shot in the seventh was his 24th of the season to match Torontos
Jose Bautista for the major league lead. Hamilton has a majors-best 67
RBIs.
Prince Fielder drove in four runs for the Tigers, including a two-run
double in the first. Three innings later, when the temperature was still
in triple digits, Fielder hit his 12th homer to make it 3-1.
"We did a decent job against Darvish. If you can get five runs off him
youre doing pretty well," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "He has good
secondary pitches. He looks like a breaking-ball pitcher."
Drew Smyly (2-3) was activated from the disabled list to start after
being out since June 11 with a blister on his left middle finger. The
lefty struck out three while allowing six runs and eight hits over 4 2-3
innings.
Ian Kinsler led off the Texas first with his first homer since June 8.
Adrian Beltre had a one-out infield single in the fourth and scored on
Michael Youngs triple to left-centre. Nelson Cruz followed with an RBI
single and then stole second base before Torreablas hit. Cruz scored the
tiebreaking run when he slid around catcher Alex Avilas swiping tag
attempt and a bat to reach out and touch the plate.
Joe Nathan worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 18 chances.
Mike Adams escaped trouble in the eighth, when the first two batters
reached before deep fly balls by Cabrera and Delmon Young sandwiched an
RBI grounder by Fielder.
Darvish joined teammate Matt Harrison and Tampa Bay left-hander
David Price as the American Leagues only 10-game winners. It was
Darvishs last start before the All-Star rosters will be announced
Sunday.
"A job of a starting pitcher is quality starts and keeping the team in
the game," Darvish said. "Its been iffy at times, but I just think
overall being able to do that, the result is that I got those wins.
Overall as a starting pitcher, I think I am doing my role, that job."
But Darvish had a bit of a rough start, even though Detroit scored three
fewer first-inning runs than the previous night.
Cabrera dropped to the ground and was sprawled out in a sitting position
when he looked toward the mound after getting hit in the head. A
trainer came out and checked on Cabrera, who appeared a bit dazed as he
got up and walked toward first base. He then scored from first on
Fielders drive into the left-centre gap.
"He has a good fastball, and hes sneaky with his delivery. He has a
plethora of different pitches," said Quintin Berry, who had an RBI
single for the Tigers. "We got a couple of runs early and felt good
about it."
Notes: Beltre is hitting .500 (22 of 44) in his past 12 games. ... Avila
was back in the Tigers lineup after missing the series opener with
tendinitis in his left knee. He had a double in the fifth and scored on
Berrys single. ... Tigers closer Jose Valverde, who hadnt pitched since
June 15 because of a sprained right wrist, pitched a perfect eighth. ...
Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is the only other pitcher in the majors
with four 10-strikeout games. ... During a kiss-cam segment between
innings, Rangers president Nolan Ryan and his wife Ruth were shown on
the video board with a message wishing them a Happy 45th anniversary.
Also shown was a picture of the couple on their wedding day.

SYLVANIA, Ohio -- Even though it had only been a little over a year
since her victory in the U.S. Womens Open, So Yeon Ryu was already
feeling the pressure to win again.
She lapped the field to end the drought Sunday.
Ryu rode a string of six straight birdies in the middle of her round to a
9-under 62 and a seven-stroke victory in the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic.
"This is just my turning point," she said. "I want to win again."
Ryu began the day locked in a four-player logjam -- all South Koreans --
for first place. She took the lead by herself for the first time with
an eight-foot birdie putt at the third hole and gradually stretched her
advantage until pulling away with birdies on Nos. 9-14.
"On hole No. 9, I made a really long putt and my confidence level went
up," she said.
Still, a good friend had provided a cautionary tale. Yeon Jae Son,
competing for South Korea in rhythmic gymnastics at the London Olympics,
was in line to medal heading into the final day of competition. But,
she told Ryu by phone, she had gotten ahead of herself and ended up
missing out on a trip to the podium.
Ryu took that to heart on the course.
"It made me nervous because I really wanted to win. ... She helped a
lot," Ryu said about the message imparted by her friend. "I didnt want
to be thinking of winning. I was just thinking about my score."
Ryu ended up at 20-under 264 thanks to the lowest final round by a Farr
winner -- by three strokes.
Samantha Richdale of Kelowna, B.C., closed with a 74 and tied for 42nd.
She earned US$6,033.
On the third hole, Ryu hit her approach from the light rough to eight
feet over the flag and made the birdie putt to break free of the pack.
She added a 12-footer for birdie at the par-4 fifth to double her lead.
The lead could have grown even more; Ryu missed birdie putts of eight,
six and 10 feet at Nos. 4, 6 and 7.
Then, after I.K. Kim, who shoot a 71 and ended up tied for fifth with
Jennie Lee (67) at 11 under, narrowed her lead to a shot, Ryu rolled in a
30-footer from the front of the green at the ninth hole. Donte Whitner Jersey.
From there she took control. None of her next five birdies were outside
six feet as she dialed in her irons.
"My ball-striking was great," she said.
For good measure, she birdied the last hole -- a kick-in from two feet
-- to cap her round.
Her 62 matched the fourth-best round in tournament history. Her 20-under
total has been surpassed only by five-time Farr winner Se Ri Pak,
considered the matriarch for a generation of young South Korean players
on the LPGA Tour.
Ryu had picked up the game in the second grade as part of her schools
extracurricular activities. Shes also a gifted pianist.
Not a member of the LPGA Tour at the time, she beat fellow countrywoman
Hee Kyung Seo -- her playing partner Sunday -- to win the 2011 Open in a
three-hole playoff.
This season, Ryu has eight top 10s including a tie for second in
Australia.
Angela Stanford made a long birdie putt on the final hole for 66 to
finish second at 13-under 271.
As Ryu pulled away, she couldnt do much but watch.
"When I looked at the leaderboard on 14, she was at 16 under at that
point," said Stanford, a native Texan. "I thought, Shes obviously having
a great day. When you see that somebodys running away with it, you
continue to chase them but if I cant catch her Id like to be second."
South Koreans Inbee Park and Chella Choi each shot 69 and shared third
place at 12 under.
The victory was worth $195,000 to Ryu, who is an LPGA rookie.
Ryu was overjoyed -- and relieved by the victory.
"After winning a major tournament, everyone had really high
expectations," she said. "I had no wins after that, so some were
disappointed for me. So I really wanted to win as soon as possible --
and today I made it."
