If you suffer from insomnia it's possible that the sleep apena is the cause, sleep apnea pronounced (AP-ne-ah) is a common disorder in which the breathing is interrupted or becomes very shallow during sleep.
These breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. In severe cases these stoppages can often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Once normal breathing starts again, it is often announced by a loud grunt or breathless sound.
For sufferers sleep apnea can be a chronic, ongoing syndrome that causes insomnia over a long period of time. The effect is to move out of deep sleep and into a shallow sleep when the apnea is triggered and the breathing slows or becomes shallow. This often results in insomnia, broken sleep patterns or poor sleep quality that causes fatigue whilst awake. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of daytime drowsiness.
Defeat sleep apnea
The vast majority of those who have sleep apnea don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. Because doctors can have trouble detecting the complaint, sleep apena often goes undiagnosed; this is compounded as there are no other tests for the problems.
Typically, a spouse or bed partner is usually the first person to notice the signs of sleep apnea. Sleep apena is the most common form of the problem - where the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. It is this restriction or blockage could cause shallow breathing or breathing is interrupted.
When the sufferer tries to breathe, the air compresses past the blockage which can cause heavy snoring. Although it may affect anyone, if the sufferer is overweight then obstructive sleep apnea is more likely to be an issue. For younger people it's feasible that they may have enlarged tonsil tissues, which could prompt obstructive sleep apnea.
The other form of apnea, which is less common is central sleep apnea. Where obstructive sleep apnea is a physical difficulty, central sleep apnea tends to be more psychological. The area of the brain that regulates breathing doesn't send the correct signals to the muscles that regulate breathing. As a result, there is no brain stimulus to breathe.
Central sleep apnea can occur in anyone. However, it's more likely in those with certain medical conditions or use certain medicines. Whilst they often occur together if there is an absence of snoring then it is more likely that central sleep apena is the probable problem.
Does sleep apena signal other issues?
Obstructive sleep apnea can be a signal for other physical issues, for example; an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, diabetes or heart failure.
In conclusion sleep apnea is a chronic condition that needs careful management. But there are a number of things you may do to offset the effect, they include lifestyle changes, mouthpieces, hypnosis, CBT or 'talking cure' therapies, surgery or breathing devices all of which can successfully cure or reduce the symptoms of sleep apnea in most people. |
