Ponting resigns as Australian cricket captain

CNN Recordbreaking batsman Ricky Ponting Coach Clearance announced his resignation as captain in the Australia cricket team on Tuesday.
The 36yearold revealed in a news conference that his decision was motivated by the desire to improve his form without worrying about demands of the captaincy and maintained that they will remain part of the team.
Ponting, who's the most successful captain in Australias history, made the announcement after returning home following his teams quarterfinal defeat in the Cricket World Cup by India.
"Ive chose to step down as captain from the Test team and also the oneday team as of now," he told media along at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
"I think itll keep us a bit mentally fresher than I have been previously in the last couple of years and i believe that if Im mentally fresh and still have got my skills in reasonable order, then Ill have the capacity to certainly bat better than I have in the past 6 months."
Ponting endorsed Michael Clarke to take over his captaincy a reign which saw the Tasmanian lead Australia to 48 victories in 77 Tests during an illustrious career spanning nine years as being a oneday skipper and seven years as Test captain.
He also helped Australia claim three oneday World Cup tournaments and under his leadership, Australia posted to begin with in the ICC One Day International rankings.
Despite such impressive credentials, Pontings Ashes record is less successful, with three series defeats by England under his captaincy the last of which was the first Ashes series Australia had lost at your house in 24 years.
In the face of recent speculation, Ponting maintained how the decision to relinquish the captaincy was entirely his personal and made with the advice of people close to him.

"I have thought for a while about what Australian cricket needs," Ponting added.
"We ought to be doing everything we can easily to win back the Ashes in 201314 and the World Cup in 2015.
